Fashion now is a game and, more
important still, a way of broadcasting
signals; we often forget that it also has
the function of covering and protecting
the body. From animal pelts·to the
most elaborate of fabrics, the materials
used appear in an amazing variety of
colours and shapes, narrative and
abstract decorative effects capable of
conveying an implied. veiled social
meaning in a subtle interplay of
overtones which often have nothing
whatsoever to do with this primary
function.
But it is not my purpose here to talk
about fashion in general, to go over
ground which has already been better
and more fully covered by others.
My subject is just one of the many
elements of man's dress which have
accompanied him in one fonn or
another throughout his history: the
safety-pin of our own times. the fibula
of ancient history and archeology.
Museum display cases, the last
resting-place of treasures both modest
and impressive which have been
brought to light by the patient work of
archeologists, have familiarized us with
this simultaneously practical and
omamental article which enjoyed such
considerable vogue as a fastening for
gannents of all kinds in the ancient
world. The fibula is regarded with
particular affection by scholars of
ancient history because the changes in
its fonn in different times and places
have enabled them to map out a system
of period styles which has been
enonnously helpful in identifying the
movements and phases of man's
history. The fibula is structurally
simple and composed ofthrce elements
- a (~ bow» or catch plate with a
clip-cover at one end. a ~ spring» or
« hinge» and the other end and a
« pin» which completes the circle and
fits into the clip-cover. It appears as a
significant clothing-associated article
over most of the ancient world in the
Orient as well as the West.
Various stone relief carvings and
bronze statuettes have survived to show
us how it was used. It appears to have
originated as a pin, the point of which
was bent over or the head beaten larger,
shaped and pierced and a chain
inserted, which was then knotted
around the pointed end so as to act as a
fastening for joins in a garment. Such
pins were usually made of copper or
bronze or of precious metals such as
silver or gold.
The crucial moment in the
development of the object, its real
invention, came with the creation of
the continuous three-part structure
described above at its simplest, the
kind of fibula which, in
« violn-bw~)
its essential functional simplicity, is
analogous to our modem safety-pin.
From this moment in its history the
decorative. often in symbolic
expression of the social status of its
owner. In some cases indeed. the same
kind of fibula appears in two fomls:
one which was actually used and
another whose size and weight made it
practically impossible to wear. In other
words, some fibulas which have come
to light in grave burials are clearly
examples ofa kind of hoarding of the
metal- usually bronze - of which they
were made.
Other types have been found whose
appearance suggests that they were
meant to be worn, but which were
made of other metals such as solid
silver or gold or gold leaf. or set with
amber or glass or semiprecious stones:
in some cases extremely sophisticated
techniques were used in their
manufacture, such as the refined
fibula tended to become more and
more elaborate, accumulating
ornamental and other symbolic
accretions which in some cases made its
basic functional task impossible to
fulli!. This elaboration affected the
catch plate of the fibula of course, the
part which stayed in view, as opposed
to the pin, which pierced the cloth of
the garment and remained concealed in
its folds.
Let us now trace the formal and
therefore ~( cultural» progress of the
fibula through a series of examples
which will illustrate its tendency
towards metamorphosis and change.
The illustrations chosen represent only
a few of the innumerable varieties
which have appeared down the ages in
various parts of the Earth, varieties
which themselves may be more or less
granulation and filigree work we find in
certain Etruscan fibulas.
This variety of form is found generally
in Italy and the rest of Europe from the
12 tho century B. C. onwards, and is
seen, amongst others, in the ( violin
bow» type and its numerous variants,
the spiral type with the disc-shaped
clip, the two - and four - spiral types
with engraved clips like the beautiful
Greek specimens which are often
dewrated with pairs of leaping
dolphins, the engraved, half-moon
types, the triangular or hair-pin
varieties with pierced calch plate,
dragons, leeches, boats, writhing snakes
and other animals and designs down to
the typically Roman fibula in which
the simple or bi-lateral spring is
replaced by what is, in effect, a hinge.

Many of the specimens dating from this
time are inscribed with the name of the
craftsman who made them. And this
panorama should certainly not ignore
the fine Celtic fibulas with their single
buttons. which often occur as pairs with
a linking chain.
In marked contrast to the considerable
variety of fibulas to be found in Italy
and the rest of Europe during the
thousand years before the birth of
Christ, the Middle Eastern specimens
developed much more statically and in
fact only two types emerged: the
semi-circular arch and the hair-pin
types, with variants limited to
decorations on the catch plate, usually
designed to place more or less emphasis
on the shape. Of the fonner type,
perhaps the most decorative are those
with the chequered design. Indeed, the

relative unifonnity of oriental fibula
types makes the few examples of
Quality craftsmanship which did
emerge all the more remarkable - SOI1l~'
of the Urartu pieces, for example (a
kingdom founded at the beginnine of
the first millenium B. C. in the
mountainous region of eastern Turke~
and north-west Iran around Lakes Van
and Unnia), which, though their basic
structure reflects the usual hairpin
shape, manage to escape the ordinary
in a series of carefully crafted little
three-dimensional figurations like the
terrifying masks of the demon Puzuzu
and other less disturbing portrayals.
Some of these fibulas have a flat,
circular or oval element at one end
engraved so that it can also be used to
personalize seals.
This rapid glance through the history of
the fibula must not fail to mention the
examples produced in Italy and the rest
of Europe during the Middle Ages, for
many of them reach the highest levels
of artistic craftsmanship. The calch
plate appears flattened into a
geometrical or animal shape, set with
precious or semiprecious stones or
enamelled decorations and employing a
sophisticated interplay of colour and
design which sometimes even suggests a
kind of baroque taste. It goes without
.saying of course that such masterpieces
were unique works of art, whereas the
bronze or iron clasps, pins and buckles
in everyday use were much more
functional and less concerned with
projecting their value as a status
symbol.
Al this point in its history the fibula
seems to have undergone a substantial
transfonnation: on the one hand, the
ornamental aspect separates from the
functional and he ancient fibula finally
changes into the modem brooch, whose
task is to beautiful the gannent it is
attached to rather than to hold together
two edges; on the other, the purely
functional aspect, deprived of all
symbolic meaning, reppcars without
frills in the fore-runner of our modem
safety·pin. In recent years, this latter
has admittedly enjoyed brief flashes of
relatively ornamental ambition - as
fasteners for women's kilts, for example
- but such manifestations have proved
but the dying flames of the gold glory.
